In 1932 was Rita Joe's birthday. Rita Joe is a Mi'kmaq (Micmac) Indian was born in Whycocomagh. Rita's first book is called "Poem of Rita Joe" was published back in 1978. Her second book named "Song of Eskasoni" was published in 1988. Rita of Eskasoni Died Tuesday night ay the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.Rita worked thought out her life to counter native stereotypes. She was born in Nova Scotia and got send to Residential School,which she was there until grade 8. She got married to a guy name Frank Joe in 1954,had 8 children and adopted two more. And she began writing in the 1960's.
Her poems presented First Nations People with in Canada,which is including love and understanding between people. Joe acted as an ambassador for native arts and culture thought out Canada,even meeting the Queen's Privy Council for Canada. She won the Nova Scotia writers prize. Rita Joe passed away when she was 75. Rita's Birthday is on March 15 1932 just like what I said at first back to Rita. She was an orphaned when she was 10 years old and lived with foster families. When she was in her 30's she began writing verses for native images in books read by some of her eight children.
She was a member of Order of Canada and Queen's Privy Council.She received a Native Award. Rita Joe is often referred to as the "poet laureate" of the Mi'kmaq people.In 1954 she married Frank Joe,and spent most of her time in Eshasoni.And sadly passed way in 2007.
